As computer have evolved to multi tasking so have we. Most of us who use computers regularly tend to do many things at none time. For example browsing, chatting, reading emails etc. One thing which has become scarce is the task bar space where open windows titles are shown and can be clicked to view a window.
Despite the browsers having tabs, most of the time I end up having 5-10 windows open with in an hour of work. It becomes exasperating to look for them in task bar.
Crystal Desktop helps you to work more efficiently by providing you virtual desktops. This means that you can avoid cluttering of your task bar and do not get distracted by other open windows.
It starts with windows and sits in system tray. The Desktop switcher can be integrated in taskbar or shown separately with adjustable transparency [Fig 1]. You can also access its functionalities through customized shortcuts (hot keys) [Fig 2].
It has 3 desktop by default but you can add many more. Each desktop can have the same icons, resolution and wallpaper or can have separate. The desktops can also be password protected, which is quite useful to protect privacy [Fig 3].
We all work hard to keep our desktops clear from icons, downloaded files, and current work documents but in my experience I end up with a messy desktop within a week. This software can have separate icons which is again a plus point.
Most unique feature I liked about this software is that you can set rules [Fig 4]. You can make a window to go to a selected desktop, filtered on the basis of window title or executable name. This means that if I want to separate my browsing with other work then I can set a filter for “Windows Internet Explorer” and all browser windows will open in separate desktop.
There is support for many languages.
Conclusion: I must say that Crystal Desktop is an excellent example of how to make user friendly software. There are so many ways provided to switch the desktops, which show the concern of author for users. One thing that can be improved is sending open windows to different desktop.
If you are heavy user of computer then I would definitely recommend you to try this software. I am sure it will improve your work efficiency.
